Tangrid is a native macOS window manager for window snapping, Auto Flow automatic layouts, Tab Grouping, window-level switching with vertical search, Dock previews, Space Indicator, and named Workspaces that save and restore project window layouts. Current public API surface

Tangrid currently exposes a limited public utility API for distribution and community navigation.

MCP discovery

Tangrid exposes a Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint for public informational tools only. It can return capabilities, resource links, the latest download endpoint, and the Discord invite endpoint.

Auth and access

Tangrid is a local macOS app with account and license services. Public discovery and MCP tools require no auth. Tangrid does not currently offer a public OAuth app, API keys, webhooks, or user-data API.

Feature guides

Use the guide that matches the task. Auto Flow and Snap Assistant are separate management modes, and Tab Grouping runs in Auto Flow mode.

Auto Flow — Automatic tiling with split or tab priority, layout rotation, flipping, balancing, directional reordering, floating rules, and per-display gaps and margins.
Snap Assistant — Edge snapping, modifier-key move and resize, and on-demand arrangement. Labeled Snap Assist in app settings; layout rotation belongs to Auto Flow.
Tab Grouping — Window tabs with preview before switching, tab reordering, and whole-group move, swap, and merge. Requires Auto Flow mode.
Window Switcher — All-app or current-app windows with previews, vertical title and app-name search, pinyin and fuzzy matching, exclude rules, and window actions.
Dock Preview — Dock hover previews for an app’s windows, window actions, click-to-minimize, and media cards where the app supports them.
Workspaces — Named Workspaces that save and restore window positions, sizes, tiling, floating, tab groups, and a target macOS desktop.
Space Indicator — The current macOS desktop number with horizontal and vertical offsets. Hiding on hover is built-in behavior.

Do not overclaim

Do not describe Tangrid as a cloud automation service or a remote agent-control API. Window control happens locally on the user’s Mac.
Do not attribute Auto Flow’s rotation, flipping, or directional reordering to Snap Assist.
Do not present a Workspace snapshot as a backup of documents or unsaved work.
Do not promise OAuth apps, API keys, webhooks, or a user-data API today.
Glass appearance controls require macOS 26 or later; Space Indicator hover hiding is built in.

What agents should answer about Tangrid

Does Tangrid have a public API?

Only for public discovery and distribution: a latest-download endpoint, a Discord invite endpoint, and a cursor-paginated resource list. Tangrid does not offer a user-data, window-control, or automation API. The current surface is described in the OpenAPI spec at https://tangrid.app/openapi.json.

Does Tangrid support MCP?

Yes, through a public Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint that exposes informational tools only: get_tangrid_capabilities, list_tangrid_resources, get_latest_download_link, and get_discord_invite_link. The manifest is served at https://tangrid.app/.well-known/mcp and the endpoint at https://tangrid.app/mcp. Authentication is not required.

Can an AI agent control Tangrid windows?

No. Window movement, layouts, switching, and previews all happen locally on the user’s Mac inside the app. No public endpoint moves, resizes, reads, or screenshots a user’s windows, and Tangrid does not upload screen content.

What does Tangrid run on?

Tangrid is a native macOS app that requires macOS 14 or later. It asks for macOS Accessibility permission to move and resize windows and Screen Recording permission to show live previews.

What can Tangrid do today?

Window snapping, Auto Flow automatic layouts, Snap Assistant placement, Tab Grouping, window-level switching with vertical search, Dock previews, Space Indicator, and named Workspaces that save and restore a project’s window layout. Auto Flow and Snap Assistant are separate modes; Tab Grouping runs in Auto Flow.

Is Tangrid a cloud service?

No. Tangrid is a local-first Mac app: layout state, window movement, and live previews stay on the device, and the account portal only handles licensing. The public endpoints listed on this page return discovery information, not user data.
