Choosing a macOS window manager

What does a Mac window manager do?

A window manager helps you arrange and resize app windows. Tangrid combines window snapping and automatic tiling with window search, switching, Dock previews, and saved Workspaces, so you can arrange a desktop and return to your work later.

How is automatic tiling different from window snapping?

Window snapping places a window where you drag it. Automatic tiling arranges managed windows as the layout changes. Tangrid offers Snap Assistant for manual placement and Auto Flow for automatic layouts, with split or tab priority and floating rules for windows you want to leave outside the layout.

Can Tangrid save and restore Mac window layouts?

Yes. Save a named Workspace and restore window positions, sizes, split layouts, tab groups, and the target macOS desktop. Reopening missing windows depends on the app and its configured launch actions. A saved layout does not back up documents or unsaved work.

Does Tangrid support multiple monitors and macOS Spaces?

Yes. Tangrid works with multiple displays and native macOS Spaces. You can set gaps and margins globally or per display, restore a Workspace to a chosen desktop, and use Space Indicator to see the current desktop number.

Which macOS versions and permissions does Tangrid require?

Tangrid requires macOS 14 or later. Accessibility permission lets it move and resize windows; Screen Recording permission enables live previews. Tangrid runs locally on your Mac and does not upload screen content or window previews to a server.
